Aubeterre is full of restaurants, but one may have hold your attention. This old cottage is at the foot of the city, wild vine covering its walls, reminding us a bucolic setting.
It goes back to centuries, and used to be an inn, more specifically, a relay in which people could stop their carriage, rest their horses, eat, and spend the night. This establishment is now, at the same time, a restaurant, a hotel, and a spa, everything you need to feel comfortable.
Fabrice and Rachel Morel are at the head of this institution. Fabrice, the chef received his training with Chef Michel Guérard, but he has quickly developed his own style and his own technique. The couple opened their first restaurant near Oxford (UK), and although they met a huge success, Fabrice got homesick and felt the need to come back to his homeland. Wandering the region of Lyon, they realised that there was already a high concentration of gourmet restaurants. Passing-by Charente, Fabrice and Rachel fell in love with Aubeterre. Here it would be perfect. A region full of local produce, yet, without any recognition for gastronomy, meaning there is so much to do and a big challenge to take up, it worked like a charm.
After working hard to renovate the building, l’Hostellerie du Périgord turned to be a successful place. The beauty of the place plays an important role, Rachel’s decoration perfectly blends French and English style.
But the cuisine of Chef Morel certainly is what makes people to come from hundred kilometers to Aubeterre. his menu speaks for itself : “Millefeuille de foie gras poché au vin rouge et à la vanille, aiguillette de canard laqué à ma façon, jus réduit aux 4 épices” , “Filet de bar cuit sur peau, risotto de fruits mer, asperges de Blaye et sa hollandaise à l’aneth, sauce crustacé” , “Diamant de hareng fumé “label rouge” pommes de terre Amandine, toast au beurre d’anchois, eaux de tomates au naturel, vinaigrette thaï” , this is mouth-watering, isn’t it ?
The restaurant cannot accommodate more than 40 guests, to ensure an authentic customer care, and a flawless cuisine.
During summer, you may enjoy the terrace, a picture is worth a thousand words :
