Aubeterre has a strong tradition of hospitality, it has welcomed pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela for over 1000 years. Aubeterre is officially listed as one of “The Most Beautiful Villages in France” since 1993. In Aubeterre you will be able to visit the underground monolithic Church of Saint Jean, carved out of the rock in the 12th century by the Benedictines. This building has a vault reaching 20 metres high and is the biggest troglodyte church in Europe. You can also visit the Romanesque Church of Saint Jacques which architecture has been influenced by Celtic, Visigoth and Scandinavian, Byzantine sculptures.
In addition to all the treasures Aubeterre has to offer, the city is strategically situated on a touristic point of view : at less than an hour and a half from Bordeaux, one hour from Périgueux, one hour from Bergerac, and less than one hour from Angoulême. Thus, you could enjoy 3 different geographical departments : Charente, Gironde, and Dordogne.
